How it is calculated
- Hourly rate = basic monthly salary ÷ 30 ÷ normal working hours per day. The law says pay is based on the basic wage but does not give the divisor, so this is the usual convention.
- Overtime on a normal day: basic hourly wage plus at least 25%, so × 1.25 for each hour (Article 19, clause 2).
- Overtime between 10 pm and 4 am: basic hourly wage plus at least 50%, so × 1.5 (Article 19, clause 3). Shift workers are excluded.
- Work on your rest day: you get another rest day, or the day's wage plus at least 50%, so × 1.5 (Article 19, clause 4).
- Work on an official holiday: the same rule, another day off or the day's wage plus at least 50% (Article 28, clause 2).
Limits: overtime may not exceed 2 hours a day, and total working hours may not exceed 144 hours every 3 weeks, except to prevent serious loss or accident (Article 19, clause 1). Board members, supervisors with employer powers, sea crews and some shift activities are exempt from the working-hours limits (Executive Regulations, Article 15). The rates are legal minimums, so your contract may pay more.
- • Hourly rate: 6,000 ÷ 30 ÷ 8 = AED 25.00
- • 10 overtime hours: AED 312.50
- • 4 night hours: AED 150.00
- • 2 rest day hours: AED 75.00
