Estimate only. Not tax advice. Some supplies are zero-rated or exempt, so check which rate applies to you.

How it is calculated

  • Add VAT: VAT = price × rate ÷ 100, then price with VAT = price + VAT.
  • Remove VAT: price before VAT = price with VAT ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100), then VAT = price with VAT − price before VAT.

Examples

Add 5% to AED 1,000
VAT AED 50.00, total AED 1,050.00
Remove 5% from AED 1,050
Price before VAT AED 1,000.00, VAT AED 50.00

Frequently asked questions

What is the VAT rate in the UAE?expand_more

The standard rate is 5%. VAT was introduced across the UAE on 1 January 2018 (Federal Tax Authority).

How do I add VAT to a price?expand_more

Multiply the price before VAT by 1.05. For example, AED 1,000 becomes AED 1,050, of which AED 50 is VAT.

How do I take VAT out of a VAT-inclusive price?expand_more

Divide the total by 1.05, not by subtracting 5%. For AED 1,050 the price before VAT is 1,050 ÷ 1.05 = AED 1,000. Taking 5% off 1,050 would give 997.50, which is wrong.

Do all goods and services carry 5% VAT?expand_more

Most do, but some supplies are zero-rated (such as certain exports and international transport) and some are exempt (such as some financial services and residential property). This calculator applies the rate you enter and does not decide which rate applies to a supply.

When must a business register for VAT?expand_more

Registration is mandatory when taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 over the previous 12 months or are expected to in the next 30 days. A business may register voluntarily if they exceed AED 187,500 (Federal Tax Authority).
